Share 5 Methods For Distinguishing Genuine Leather From PU Leather - Annaigee

February 02, 2024

Leather is divided into PU and genuine leather: genuine leather is animal skin, while PU is plastic leather or synthetic leather.

First, let's introduce genuine leather. So what exactly is genuine leather?

Genuine leather is made by processing animal skin, which is conceptually different from synthetic leather made from chemical fiber materials.

The genuine leather commonly referred to in the market is generally top-grain leather and split leather.

Common types of genuine leather are divided into the following 4 categories:

Based on material: ① Sheepskin / ② Cowhide / ③ Pigskin / ④ Horsehide;

Based on quality grades: first-layer leather, second-layer leather, composite leather. The first layer of skin is the best, followed by the second layer of skin.

So what are the characteristics and differences of these four types of genuine leather?

1. Sheepskin: The pores on the leather surface are flattened, fine, and arranged in a fish scale pattern, usually several pores form a group.

The leather is soft, flexible, and has good elasticity.

2. Cowhide: The pores on the surface of yellow cowhide are round, close together, and relatively uniform;

the pores on the surface of water buffalo leather are coarser than yellow cowhide, but the number of pores is scarce, and the texture is not as delicate as yellow cowhide.

3. Pigskin: The pores on the surface of pigskin are round, large, and inclined to penetrate deeply into the leather.

The arrangement of pores is generally three pores per group, and many small triangles appear on the surface. It has poor elasticity and a rough texture.

4. Horsehide: The pores on the surface of horsehide are flattened and clearer than sheepskin.

The leather is harder, and the arrangement of pores is regular, with a group of pores forming a pattern. It feels rough and stiff when touched.

Next, let's introduce PU leather. So what exactly is PU leather?

PU leather, PU for short, is an abbreviation of polyurethane in English.

PU leather is the outer skin made of polyurethane. It is widely used for making bags, clothing, shoes, vehicles, and leather jewelry boxes or watch boxes.

Its application range, quantity, and variety are beyond what traditional natural leather can satisfy.

PU leather also varies in quality, and good PU leather can even be more expensive than genuine leather with better molding effects and a shiny surface.

In the end, We focus on how to distinguish genuine leather from PU leather:

1. Touchdistinguish genuine leather from PU leather

Touch the surface of the leather with your hand. If it feels smooth, soft, full, and elastic, it is genuine leather, while synthetic leather generally feels stiff, rigid, and lacks flexibility.

When you press the leather surface with your finger, there are no obvious pore wrinkles.

If wrinkles appear and do not disappear naturally, it is not genuine leather.

2. Sightdistinguish genuine leather from PU leather

Genuine leather has clear pores and patterns.

Cowhide has evenly distributed fine pores, goatskin has coarse and sparse pores, and pigskin has fish-scale-like pores.

The presence or absence of pores on the leather surface is an important feature for distinguishing genuine leather.

3. Smelldistinguish genuine leather from PU leatherGenuine leather has the scent of leather, while synthetic leather has a strong plastic odor.
4. Burndistinguish genuine leather from PU leather

Tear off a small fiber from the back of the leather and burn it. If it produces a pungent smell and forms clumps, it is synthetic leather.

If it produces a hair smell and does not form hard clumps, it is genuine leather.

Burning the edge of the leather will produce a smell, but not the burnt hair odor.

5. Water absorptiondistinguish genuine leather from PU leather

Genuine leather has good water absorption on the surface, while artificial leather has good water resistance.

You can dip your finger in water and wipe it on the surface of the garment to observe its water absorption.

If it has good water absorption, it is genuine leather, while if it has poor or no water absorption, it is likely artificial leather.

Further distinguishing methods are as follows:

1. Different appearancedistinguish genuine leather from PU leatherGenuine leather has very clear grain patterns, while the grain pattern of PU leather is not obvious.
2. Different smelldistinguish genuine leather from PU leatherGenuine leather has a natural leather smell, while PU leather has a strong plastic odor.
3. Different touchdistinguish genuine leather from PU leather

Genuine leather feels soft, elastic, smooth, and delicate, while PU leather feels less soft and slightly rough.

When purchasing, you can press the surface with your fingers. If the leather surface sinks and does not show any grain, it is generally synthetic leather.

4. Different breathabilitydistinguish genuine leather from PU leatherGenuine leather has pores on its surface, making it highly breathable, while PU leather is not very breathable.
5. Different pricesPU leather is a type of synthetic leather with low production costs and cheap prices, while genuine leather is made from animal hides and is relatively more expensive.
